When creating a square foot garden the spacing of plants is something worth planning. In my opinion the most successful way to achieve proper spacing in your square foot garden is to draw it all out first and I usually use graph paper. Look at the recommended spacing for your plants as listed on the seed packs. You can ignore the larger row spacing on the seed packs because you won’t need space to walk in a square foot garden.
When spacing your square foot garden, you can also pack in smaller plants between the big ones. So if you have a square foot area with a tomato plant in the middle you can surround that tomato with spinach or other greens that will not grow to the height of the tomato.
Using your drawing you can plan the spacing of your garden of each square foot separately. When Mel Bartholomew popularized the square foot garden method, he makes clear that the planning and much tighter spacing of the garden are its main advantages.
Additionally, this tighter spacing of the square foot garden is allowed because the soil is never walked on or compacted which means it is always loose and the roots can grow easily and healthy in the proper square foot garden medium.
